bill moyers on the massive maldistribution of wealth

a while ago, i dropped this here in the hopes that it would start something… it didn’t start much.

maybe this time…

The rich have the right to buy more homes than anyone else. They have the right to buy more cars than anyone else, more gizmos than anyone else, more clothes and vacations than anyone else. But they do not have the right to buy more democracy than anyone else.

[emphasis is not mine - that's in the original]

update (2004.06.18 23:11): this same quote appears on metafilter. hmm. maybe something will happen this time. following the lead from the comments there, i thought it worth adding this too….

Our political, financial and business class expects them to climb out of poverty on an escalator moving downward.

  1. dear bill;

    i’m so glad that you are continueing on with your programs each friday night on kcet. we need your confrontational way to help prevent our decmocracy from being destroyed by the eroding actions of our government. perhaps another topic which might be worth airing would be how the ‘borrowing’ from social security, and medicare has affected and will soon be affecting the lives of millions of americans. for the past several decades spending has gone on at an unpresidented rate with ‘borrowing’ from these 2 most critical funds. the money put into these funds is from the salaries of most americans and was meant for the use of the employees’ retirements and health care and should not be ’stolen’ from us. it is going to create a disaster worce than any other we’ve experienced up to this point. greed and irresponsible spending by the current administration are the current culpruts. wouldn’t it be great if the money spent in the unjustified war in iraq could have been channeled to help the many states who are operating in the red and to convert the fuel from fossil fuels to hydrogen.

  3. Hey Bill, an ignorant Bush Voter here… Damn, I’m disappointed that Kerry didn’t win so my side couldn’t mount a coup. I mean, shit, a COUP! That would have been something to have been a part of rather than handing the Democrats a devastating loss in the presidential election, as well as the congressional elections. But, you can’t have everything. I guess we’ll just have to be satisfied with running the show four the next four years and making history while your side whines and observes history being made. Take care, Bill. Don’t get too suicidal…
